Alabama Fusion Center making a difference in law enforcement

The Fusion Center is part of the two best things coming from ALEA consolidation, according to Alabama Secretary of Law enforcement Spencer Collier

In the last 10 months, child predator arrests are up 33 percent. “That alone justifies the necessity and why we consolidated state law enforcement." Collier said.

The Fusion Center is basically an information hub. The center collects reports from local, state, and federal officials, giving the proper information to those out in the field.

The center is part of the state’s main defense against terrorism, checking out possible information and distributing it to those in need.

The Center was created in the mid 2000’s to help communications between levels of law enforcement. Every state has at least one fusion center, with more populous states having multiple ones.

The Center helps out on state wide alerts, increasing the speed of Amber, missing child and senior alerts. It helps those in the field do their job more effectively. “If we get an event that's in the field where we need real time intel, we'll send an intelligence analyst out to the field where that analyst can work the databases by doing the criminal or the background checks that need to be done on suspects so those investigators can get in the field and work.” Collier said.

The Secretary said the Fusion Center has really benefited from ALEA’s consolidation, as more officers have taken advantage of the service it provides. “Some people come out to me... 10, 15 year investigators... saying I don't know why we didn't use this in the past" Collier said.

According to Collier the Fusion Center was not hurt by the recent budget cuts, because it is funded partially with federal funds.
